Shifting Grounds
(2025/26...ongoing)
For this long-term project, I am exploring places along the so-called Berliner Oberspree, a stretch of the river in the southeastern part of the city. This area was not only a weekend retreat for generations of Berliners but also a region shaped by immense industrial growth starting in the middle of the 19th century.
Along the banks, traces of this glorious "Elektropolis" era are still present — mixed with further marks of history, including two world wars, four decades of the GDR, and 35 years of reunified Germany. For me, having grown up in the vicinity of these places, this area is deeply connected with stories and emotions. Investigating this environment today and comparing it with memories from my youth feels both familiar and unreal. Captured at night with long exposures, these pictures reveal a mystique and a raw beauty within these sites.
This project reflects on the broader question of how man-made structures persist over time, through shifting political systems, different owners, and altered uses. It explores how places become part of our lives and identity, and how our memories, with time, become history.
